Embracing the Winter Pause: A Season of Rest and Creative Rejuvenation

Winter’s rhythm ~ slow down, rest more, find comfort in simpler, quieter routines. Allow your bodies and spirits to embrace this season of rest and rejuvenation.

❄️It’s mid January, the temperatures have dropped and the snow has finally arrived here in the beautiful Creston Valley. As we step into the heart of winter, there's a certain magic in the air that calls for a gentle slowdown. In the bustling world of art and creativity, we often find ourselves caught up in the perpetual rhythm of creation, promotion, and marketing. I invite you to join me in savoring the beauty of this slower season. Here are a few suggestions that will help you do just that!

1. Cozy Creativity Retreats

Winter invites us to wrap ourselves in blankets, sip on hot cocoa, and let our imaginations run wild. Consider setting up a cozy corner in your studio or home where you can retreat with your art supplies. I am finding pleasure in exploring new mixed media techniques without the pressure of deadlines or marketing strategies. Let the cold winds outside inspire the warmth of your creativity within.

*Creative tip: Start a jigsaw puzzle. These require patience and concentration, which can help improve focus and attention span. They also require analytical thinking, as you have to figure out how the pieces fit together. And they are a fun past time for everyone in your family! (I always have one on the go through the winter!)

2. Reflective Art Journaling

January is the perfect time for introspection and self-discovery. Take out your art journal and let your thoughts flow onto the pages. I often use this time to reflect on my artistic journey, set intentions for the year ahead, and experiment with new ideas. Remember, the winter season is not just a pause; it's an opportunity for personal and artistic growth.

*Creative tip: Try doing “morning pages”, a creative practise by Julia Cameron, author of “The Artist’s Way”. (I am revisiting these this January)

3. Nature-Inspired Walks

Despite the chill in the air, a winter stroll can be incredibly invigorating. Bundle up and explore the winter wonderland outside your doorstep. I often find inspiration in the stark beauty of winter landscapes, and you might too. Collect objects like pinecones, dried leaves, or even take photographs to incorporate into your future mixed media pieces. (I enjoy watching the birds on my outings.)

4. Artistic Playdates

Reach out to fellow artists and plan a play date together. Bring a sketchbook and your favorite markers and allow yourself to simply free sketch while you chat over coffee or tea and catch up with each other. Winter is an excellent time for community and shared creativity. I enjoy connecting with other artists, sharing ideas and the “playful sketches” you create can spark new ideas for future paintings. It's a wonderful way to break free from the isolation that can sometimes accompany the creative process.

"Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is time for home." -Edith Sitwell

5. Artistic Self-Care

Lastly, don't forget to indulge in some artistic self-care. Treat yourself to a day of exploring new art supplies, experimenting with colors, or simply losing yourself in the joy of creation. Or take yourself out and visit a local gallery or gift shop. Browse and notice what paintings or items resonate with you. Treat yourself to a lunch date. (This one is a favorite of mine.) I emphasize the importance of nurturing your artistic spirit during this slower season, allowing yourself the time and space needed to recharge.

“Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.” -John Boswell

As we navigate through January, let's embrace the opportunity to rest, rejuvenate, and rediscover the joy of creating without the hustle. Follow my lead and find delight in the simple pleasures that this colder month brings. Winter is not a pause in your artistic journey; it's a chance to let your creativity unfold in its own time.

Wishing you warmth, inspiration, and a creatively fulfilling winter season!
