Every Painting Starts With The Planting Of Seeds

Updated: Dec 10, 2024

I plant seeds of beauty and happiness into every painting. ~Laura Leeder

"Your mind is a garden. Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or you can grow weeds."

When I begin a new painting, it always starts with the "planting of seeds"—tiny pieces of inspiration that bloom into the finished work. Using small torn pages from my favorite home decor magazines, I carefully collage them onto wooden panels. Each piece is thoughtfully chosen—vibrant colors, floral patterns, or words and phrases that spark joy.

Words like artistic, everyday magic, beautiful, gardening for the soul often find their way into these layers. These are the "seeds of beauty and happiness" that quietly anchor my paintings. Some will stand out boldly in the finished work, while others hide just beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered. Even the hidden ones make me smile, filling the process with happiness and guiding my intention for each piece.

Layer by layer, I build the painting. Transparent paints blend and bleed together, stencils and marks add texture, and colors emerge through each step. Once the foundation feels alive, I sketch in the design and begin adding the final touches of paint. The result is a tapestry of intricate textures and rich color combinations woven together into something that feels alive with joy.

As I paint, I focus on the emotions I want to convey—whether it’s a sense of peace, wonder, or delight—and the connection I hope to create with you, the viewer. Though the process can be complex, it’s always deeply rewarding, and I love sharing this journey through my art.
