As winter slowly loosens its grip, there comes a moment when the world begins to soften again. The light lingers a little longer in the afternoon, the air feels gentler, and the garden begins to stir beneath the soil.
These early days of spring always bring the return of familiar voices in the trees. Chickadees are often among the first to greet the changing season, their cheerful calls carrying across the garden even while the mornings are still cool.
This quiet shift inspired a new trio of paintings I’ve been working on in the studio — a small collection celebrating some of the first blossoms of spring and the joyful presence of these beloved little birds.
I’m calling the collection Spring Song.
The Feeling of Early Spring
Early spring has its own special atmosphere. It isn’t loud or dramatic. Instead, it arrives gradually - through small signals we begin to notice after the long winter months.
The light shifts slightly in the studio window.
And the birds become more active again in the trees.
Soon, a few blossoms will start to appear on branches. More migrating birds will appear alongside the chickadees and other wintering birds and just like that Spring will have arrived!
These subtle changes and the delicate blossoms are what inspired the soft colours and gentle mood of these new paintings.
Each piece captures a chickadee perched among the earliest blooms of the season, celebrating the quiet return of life to the garden.
The Trio of Paintings
This small series follows the unfolding rhythm of spring through three familiar blossoms.
Cherry Blossom Song
Soft pink blossoms surround a curious chickadee, suggesting the first delicate signs of spring returning to the garden.
Daffodil Waltz
Bright daffodils bring a cheerful burst of colour as the season begins to awaken more fully.
Orchard Singer
Clouds of apple blossoms create a peaceful setting for a chickadee resting among the branches of a spring orchard.
Together, the three paintings tell a simple story of the season slowly unfolding — blossom by blossom.
Three gentle chickadees welcome the unfolding garden—first the cherry blossoms, then the cheerful daffodils, and finally the soft clouds of apple blossom. (displayed together in this order, they create a pleasing symetry)
"Outside the house, the chickadee is calling out to me. Flitting in and out of trees, it's living life full and free."
The Cheerful Chickadee
The chickadee is one of North America’s most beloved songbirds.
Small, curious, and surprisingly resilient, these little birds remain active throughout the winter and are often among the first to celebrate the return of spring.
Their friendly personality and lively presence make them a natural symbol of cheerfulness, curiosity, and resilience — qualities that feel especially welcome as a new season begins.
For many of us, hearing the call of a chickadee is one of the first signs that warmer days are on the way.
Bringing Spring Indoors
Seasonal art is a simple way to refresh a room and welcome the changing rhythms of nature into your home.
A small piece of spring artwork can brighten a hallway, bring colour to a kitchen wall, or add a cheerful focal point to a cozy reading corner.
Art inspired by blossoms and birds carries a gentle reminder of the returning garden — even on the days when spring weather still keeps us indoors.
Cards, Prints & Future Bird Designs
These new chickadee paintings will soon be available as greeting cards and 8x10 prints, making them easy to enjoy in your own home or share as a thoughtful gift for someone who loves birds and nature.
I’ve ordered the first batch of cards and print samples and look forward to sharing them soon at an upcoming Pop-Up Market here in Creston.
This collection is also part of a growing series of Backyard Bird paintings, inspired by the birds I see visiting our garden throughout the seasons.
More feathered friends will certainly be arriving in the studio soon.

A Thought for the Season
"Spring arrives on quiet wings"
Sometimes the most beautiful changes in nature happen gradually, almost unnoticed — until suddenly the garden is alive again with colour, blossoms, and birdsong.
For me, these chickadee paintings are a small celebration of that gentle return.
